Meet Cody Spyker
Cody Spyker
(they/them)
Therapist, Licensed Social Worker (LSW)
Cody (they/them) loves what therapy offers most: being radically with another person — clinically and interpersonally — investigating alongside one another what it means to be embodied and tasked with this human life, in all its dimensions. They believe openness and curiosity are the topsoil of a fantastic therapeutic relationship, in which seeds of introspection, compassion, and transformation can bloom forth. Cody draws on Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness, and Play Therapy, adapting creatively to meet each young person or adult where they are. They approach the work with a culturally humble, decolonizing lens, examining the micro and macro systems people function within and how to not just survive them, but thrive within them.
Cody enjoys engaging with a wide range of people, ages 3 to 103+, and finds each stage of life fascinating; sometimes toddlers have the wisdom of an elder, and those with creaky knees need a reminder that it's okay, even necessary, to tend to the inner child and play. They feel especially called to work with the LGBTQIA+ population, neurodivergent folks, youth and their families in need of a listening ear and a supportive, generative space, and those facing transitions of any kind. Cody welcomes conversation around depression, anxiety, activism, self-expression, gender & sexuality, non-traditional relationship structures like polyamory and non-monogamy, and anything else that needs to arise.
Cody threads their personal and professional experiences into their work as a therapist: as a teacher and tutor instructing students in emotional regulation and executive functioning; as a social worker in New Mexico case-managing folks experiencing homelessness and seeking support and humanization; as a stand-up comedian, feeling the power of laughter to brighten a heavy heart; and as part of a regenerative community project, building relationality with housemates and the land. Now, especially as a genderqueer person, Cody seeks to be joyfully visible and supportive of all who strive to be themselves in a world that often wants to confine and restrict self-expression.
Outside of work, Cody enjoys time in nature, reading, their beloved wife and animal companions, and jigsaw puzzles that miraculously come together one piece at a time. Originally from Colorado, they love exploring the state, the desert southwest of New Mexico and Utah, and treasure a jump in the ocean whenever possible.
